Blackett's Building, at centre, on the southern corner of Queen and Shortland Streets, was completed in 1879 (the fourth level was added in 1912). The timber buildings beside it at right were replaced in 1882* (the new buildings can be seen in a Burton Brothers photograph of this scene, on this site here and can also be seen in the 2024 image).
