The date is likely 1884 or perhaps 1885; mentions of the British Restaurant, and the firm of Bolton and Robinson, whose signage can be seen in the Burton Brothers picture, first appear in Auckland newspapers of the period in those years. It may even be that the photograph was taken on on the same day as the previous image in this gallery (looking north from the vicinity of Wyndham Street, Burton Brothers plate no. 2467) as this was made from a spot just a few steps away from this location.
