The presence of the dog in Winkelmann's picture is a nice touch, and perhaps hints at his often playful sense of humour. The photograph below shows Winkelmann (playing a zither) on the veranda of his friends the Whitneys' house at Wenderholm; a seemingly fairly conventional group photograph, until one notices that one of the dogs is wearing spectacles and appears to be reading a magazine!

The version of Winkelmann's photograph used here has been made from a print, rather than from his original negative, which seems to have been lost (hence the sepia colour). Still, it's very detailed, as can be seen in the crops below.
