An upper limit for the date of the historical image must be 1896 as in that year Mr H Maxfield put up for auction all the chattels and stock of his grocery business*, whose canopied entrance is seen here, near centre.

The central building would later become the Milne and Choyce department store. Partly seen at left is the ornate façade of the Bank of New South Wales, and at right, the Bank of New Zealand building. Click here for a then-and-now image pair showing these buildings in 1913.
