A panorama formed from four Henry Winkelmann plates which I've digitally stitched together. Winkelmann, given his particular fondness for finding elevated camera positions, must have eyed the construction of St Matthew's bell tower with more interest than perhaps any other Aucklander, and wasted no time in making images such as this, made in the year before the new church's official consecration and opening. Below, selected crops from each of Winkelmann's four original plates.
