Looking south from near the statue of Queen Victoria. Many elements of this scene seem little changed after the passage of roughly 120 years; the foreground plinths look as if they may well be the originals, though the festooned urns they support have been replaced.
The unidentified photographer who recorded this scene had gone to some trouble; the camera position is considerably elevated, perhaps using some sort of ladder arrangement like that seen below showing Nelson photographer Frederick Nelson (Pompy) Jones (1881-1962).
