Looking approximately south from Customs Street (Customhouse Street as it was then) along Queen Street. The Thames Hotel is at left, the Waitematā Hotel at right.
The date for the historical image must be later than 1877, as in December of that year Mr AB Donald took over a ship chandlery business on the corner of Fort Street; his name appears in signage for the firm just left of centre in the historical image. And it must be earlier than 1884 as in 1883 the two-storey Thames Hotel seen here was replaced by a three-storey building. See the newspaper announcements below.
