This picture must date from no earlier than 1889 as in that year the construction of the Auckland Customhouse, seen here at right, was completed. The anonymous photographer, whose shadow appears here, is evidently hand-holding his camera, a rarity in the years preceeding 1888 when George Eastman introduced his first Kodak camera, enabling relatively spontaneous "snapshots" like this one.
