Historical image: View of Auckland Ferry Building and waterfront from Freemans Bay. Price, William Archer, 1866-1948: Collection of post card negatives. Ref: 1/2-000961-G. Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington, New Zealand. /records/23132822
Dating the historical image: The photograph by Price shows the original Endeans Building on the corner of Queen and Quay Streets (in the central, damaged part of the picture) built in 1905 and replaced after a fire in 1914-15. The picture also shows the Chief Post Office in Queen Street (the building with the domed turret on the skyline) which opened in 1912. The Ferry Building, seen here to the left of centre, also opened in 1912. So Price's image was presumably made between 1912 and 1914. Given that the Ferry Building's clock tower appears to be awaiting the installation of its clock, the earlier date seems more likely.
Price would return to this scene some years later: click here for a picture that he would make from a little further south along the wharf around 1918.
