The department store Milne and Choyce took over this 1870s building (built for New Zealand Loan and Mercantile) in 1909. The old building was replaced by the one seen in the 2024 view in 1921-4, and the store ceased trading here in the mid-1970s. See this Heritage New Zealand account for more on the site's history.
