The Victoria Arcade building, seen here at left, was completed in 1885. Blackett's Building, at centre, on the corner of Shortland Street, was completed in 1879. A fourth level was added in 1912.
Below: the Burton Brothers photographer made a couple of exposures of this scene. Click to toggle a transition between the two plates. The sun has moved appreciably between the two exposures, and an unseen hand has opened one of the windows of Blackett's building (leftmost second-storey window). The second plate is Te Papa number C.011210.
