The historical image was published in the Weekly Graphic and New Zealand Mail of 4 November 1908. It was part of a section celebrating the completion of the North Island Main Trunk Line and the long-awaited linking by rail of Auckland and Wellington. The picture shows the Southern and Rotorua Express leaving the departure platform.

Among the several Customs Street East mercantile buildings in the 1908 image that have survived in whole or in part is the P. Hayman and Co. Warehouse (former), constructed in 1899 - 1900. Its façcade that faced the old railway station (on Galway Street) is pictured below.
