The inclusion of the name Edward Browse Gilberd in the Turnbull Library's citation for the 1870s image (above) is awfully misleading on a casual reading. Only his dates (1904-1991) give the game away that he could never have taken this photograph. It seems that Gilberd loaned a collection of copies of photographs to the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1980. I do wish museum and library curators would stop doing this, and make the authorship of pictures clear.
