This transition should not be taken too literally; the actual 1860s camera position was probably somewhat farther east (which would place it inside a modern building immediately behind the 2025 camera position) and a little higher.
Everything in the 1860s photograph has vanished, but a memory of the pier persists here; near centre in the 2025 picture is a narrow lane and stairs, connecting Beach Road with Anzac Avenue above, called Wynyard Steps (see below).
Below, a similar image from the same period, showing a little more of the waterfront at right. It must predate the picture above somewhat as Admiralty House, the prominent building at centre-right, has yet to be built. The building partly seen at far right is Dangar's Flour Mill.
