The date for this photograph must be 1889 or later as it was in that year that Ah Chee Dining Rooms (all meals sixpence) seen here next to the Union Bank, opened, having taken over the previous establishment known as Cox's (seen in the first two images of this sequence). Below, an advertisement from the Auckland Star, 24 May 1889.


A few days later, in the issue of 29 May, the Star carried this report:



If the image is by George Valentine it would be among the last that he made; he died in 1890.
